We are holding a one day only Gala in support of the Church Of St Mary The Virgin, Bishops Lydeard Church Roof Appeal.
Please come and lend your support for both us and this spectacular example of a medieval Church.
There is a full days entertainment planned for the 10th Sept 2005 including a great show put on by The Knights Of Powderham Castle.
The Reverend Michael Wishart writes: St Mary's Church is in desperate need of raising over £400,000 for renovations and repairs to the tower and the roof. The tower is dated 1490 and is one of the finest towers of its type in all England; the roof and buttresses are as old and with all old buildings repairs cost a fortune . Were we to try to raise this sum by normal fund raising functions it would probably take about 200 years so one of my parishioners has come up with an idea which could raise the money in one go. The aim is to encase the church in coloured plastic strips which will be sold for £10 each. In return the buyers will receive five things:
1. The knowledge that they are helping to preserve a medieval treasure for future generations.
2. They will be contributing to Barnardos Children’s Charity as a percentage will be donated to this extremely worthwhile cause.
3. A chance to win a New Car, A Holiday in Portugal or a Weekend at a Health farm!
4. Their names recorded in a book for posterity
5. Free entry into the Fayre.
